The knit stitch and purl stitch are the fundamental basic stitches for knitting. Once mastered the knit and purl stitches, patterns can be formed with a combination of both stitches. For instance, rib stitch is 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch (written 1k, 1p), or 2 knit and 2 purl form the rib stitch. Rib stitch is super stretchy fabric which bounces back, the main reason why rib stitch is used most of the time used for sleeve cuffs, around necks and the base of sweaters.
Practice, practice and practice. Every stitch is an improvement on the next until you are comfortable with your stitches. Keep knitting and enjoy the journey
